Colrado’s Front Range weather has been nothing but unpredictable. This summer, torrential rains, severe storms, floods, and hailstorms are the constant visitors. The spring melt-off and wild weather patterns swelled up the rivers and streams making spring and summer fly fishing more challenging than usual. On the other hand, it can hone your skills and compel you to apply the knowledge you acquired over the years to your local waters. You will be rewarded if you are patient enough to read the waters and select the best technique for the situation.
South Platte River- Deckers, Colorado May 6, 2023
Pre-melt-off season in South Platte River. The river was around 100 cfs and the water temperature hovered between 43 to 49 degrees F throughout the day. Most of the fish we caught were found at the pool’s head. We barely move from the spot since we were catching them left and right. Overall, it was a fantastic day to be out and wet some lines.
My daughter and I had a quick lunch at Decker’s Corner before heading out for our afternoon session. The food was delicious. Don’t forget to get one of their thick shakes. The strawberry cheesecake is my favorite

The melt-off has begun. The flows have increased after a couple of weeks since our last trip. Recent storms contributed to the rising water levels. Surprisingly, the water clarity was outstanding. The fish were actively feeding on the surface and at the bottom.
