It’s the time of year again! The smell of freshly- baked pumpkin pie fills the kitchen. People are lining up to get their cup of pumpkin spice latte. Cinnamon sugar, cider donuts, cold mornings, and longer nights. You name it. Fall is hands down my favorite season of the year. There is a certain magic to it. You can smell it in the air.

I caught some of my biggest trout in autumn. Fish become opportunistic feeders in the fall and are ready to defend their turf from intruders. These instincts are triggered in preparation for the spawning season. Terrestrials such as grasshoppers, ants, and other bugs usually find themselves in the water either by ill-fated flight, a miscalculated hop or by sheer bad luck. A trout will gladly take that opportunity to snack on them if they get stuck on the water surface. When you are trying to fish for trout in the fall, you have to focus on shady banks where they would tend to hide and linger since it gives them a sense of security. Coincidentally, this is the usual spot where terrestrial insects land when they fall in the water.
If you ask me about the essential requirement for fall fishing, I tell you stealth. If you tried fall fly fishing, you are probably aware that lower water flows and gin-clear water pose a challenge. That is why stealth is a requirement. Fall weather also brings lower water temperatures and erratic weather changes. Dressing up in layers is also a must. Your choice of waders can either make or break your fishing trip. Since I started fly fishing more than a decade ago, I have stuck with Simms chest waders. They are made to last. I Apatched up mine a couple of times for pinhole leaks. About 12 years later, I’m still using the same waders. It pays to invest in fishing gear that will give you a long time of comfort and protection on your trips.
